U TURN PROJECT - DEBUT SINGLE 'U TURN'. NUVYBE RECORDS (2010)
The vision of U Turn Project is to clearly represesnt quality music from new and aspiring artists, a wide range of creativity that showcases various genres and Unity.
The U Turn project concept was inspired by today's current state of the music industry as a whole. Record sales have dropped and R&B/Hiphop artists and Soul music musicians have sold out to the sound of watered down 'pop' music, don't get me wrong, that pop music has it's place but so does what black music was built on, 'Soul'. As a result, new aspiring artists have not been able to discover who they are as creative individuals which has kept the insanity curse popular. Retail record stores have closed down because of declining sales which was due to poor product releases from major record companies and the rise of the digital era so U Turn is simply here to help contribute and support new artists that have stayed true to their crafts.
So who's behind the U Turn Project? NuVybe Records was set up by Janelle Middleton, wife of legendary producer Herb Middleton in 1999 as an independent label to counter the current Quo, seeing it as a new way of doing 'business' and producing original classics for most genres to be served to music lovers all over the world, not limited to any age or group. NuVybe Records is a company where artists are treated as people first and it's mission is to restore integrity in music. Welcome to U Turn Project.

SOJAY - IT'S TIME WE OFFICIALLY MEET. DEBUT ALBUM (2010)
The SoJay story started at an early age, singing and participating in local choirs and competitions before relocating to Toronto, Canada from her home city of Ottawa. As a teenager in a new city she'd always had singing on her mind and eventually got invlolved in the music scene by volunteering her time for Phem Phat Productions, producers of the all female talent showcase Honey Jam and has never looked back. She's says; that experience changed my life by introducing me to the Toronto music scene and was the first of many career defining moments.
To date, she has shared the stage with some of the most talented artists in the industry, including: Saidah Baba Talibah, Natasha Waterman, Divine Brown, Ray Robinson, Toya Alexis and Toronto soul Hop artist a.k.a SUBLIMINAL. Perfoming both vocal duties on his song “Music” for the TRAINATHOUGHT LP as well as live on stage when he opened for Eric Roberson at this years 2010 Urban Music Festival.
Toronto seems to breed talented artists and Sojay is no exception. Apart from her current debut LP, SoJay is also a talented voiceover artist, actress and has a previous EP under her belt from back in 2000. She tell us; “It’s difficult to express into words how passionate I am about this current project, it’s been an extraordinary experience and I hope listeners will sit back, close their eyes, feel the energy and SMILE because this is why I make music".
Her debut album is a real gem for both music lovers and supporters of todays Indie music artists, with her sweet vocals taking you on a journey through life experiences with songs like the jazzy "Sentimental" to the more Hophop influenced "Love U But Don't Like U" and Rock Reggae rhythms of "Boulevard Of Dreams". Using conscious lyrics and personal influences such as Prince, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott "It's Time We Officially Meet" is definately breaking the mold that is often associated with today’s music. It's an all round package of Neo-soul, jazz, reggae and pop rock in one sitting

Blending epic Blade Runner soundscapes and Krautrock sequencer lines into cruising west coast beats and beyond, he proves that science fiction and funk are not only compatible, but have always belonged together. DEXTER KENDRICK - GALAXY: A MEMOIR. LP (2010)
Dexter Kendrick is definitely a name you're gonna be hearing more of, that's for sure. His new 2010 album entitled Galaxy: A Memoir is an all round package that brings out classic flavours from past decades yet still manages to sound current.
He's used some interesting sounds and textures throughout that really compliment his vocal styling. There's so many stand out tracks on here, check out 'The Calling' for example which borrows that classic snip from 'Mystic Brew' to killer cuts like 'Hope' where his velvety vocals flows nicely over a Roy Ayers influenced “Mystic Voyage to harder hitting joints like 'Don't Leave' and 'I Like Ya Style' plus check out the video for the track 'Time' below.
Dexter Kendrick brings novel energy to the category of R&B/soul. He incorporates his gentle swagger with a fusion of melodic beats and intimate lyrics. Minutes spent listening will seduce the free spirited and at the same time comfort the weary lover...his sound relaxes you, tempts you and leaves you vulnerable.
His budding music career started while attending The University of Hartford in Connecticut. Performing with his first band, Royal Ink, he impressed the Hartford college community very quickly; generating a fan base that would later book him copious gigs throughout the city of Hartford, New York and his hometown Harrisburg, PA., his experimental sound was creating a buzz. 2003 marked the release of his debut album Saturn’s Moon presents…Janus. This project made his music tangible, reaching ears beyond his campus. Performances including; University of Connecticut’s Spring Fling Showcases, Connecticut’s Hip Hop Summit, B.E.R.T.T. Family Presents…Expect The Unexpected, Black Unity Showcases, appearances for Muscular Dystrophy Benefits, performances at Soul Café and The Sugar Bar in NYC, The Millennium Music Conference and the Levitt Pavilion in Harrisburg, PA proving his legit musical aesthetic has remained consistent since his first appearance in 2002.
Music is his livelihood; raison d’être. With a foundation solid in his church, Kendrick started his singing career as a member of Voices of Unity in Steelton, PA. With a voice that most would agree came natural; Kendrick nurtured the encouragement and birthed a new sound, unlike what’s being classified as neo-soul today. His music is the story accounting the process from being the son of an amazing singer to an established artist that composes, writes and arranges his own music.

LISA ZURE - SWEET FRUIT EP + 2010 REMIXES feat JON PECOS AND PASSION HiFi
Sweet Fruit, the debut EP release from Soul Singer Lisa Zuré, is one of the most uniquely sensual and authentic incarnations of R&B today. A prolific singer/songwriter, Lisa Zuré has always brought a soulfully sensual and innovative musicality to every song she creates. The sound of her voice is unique and slightly addictive; once you have heard it, you will want to hear it again and again. Before moving to Brooklyn, Zuré worked with a number of well-known and come-up producers and artists in both LA and the SF Bay Area. She came to New York in 2005 with a musical vision and the hope she would find kindred souls who would catch her vibe. Coincidentally, the very first Brooklynite she encountered was veteran producer Eric “Mr. Diz” Cole (aka K-Swift)… and the rest is history. Working nonstop, the two discovered—almost by accident—their signature sound, which (for lack of a better name) they call “Modern Soul.” The music has been embraced in the US and overseas (Europe, Africa and Asia) by listeners of all ages and races, and is steadily gaining a dedicated fan base all over the world. Obviously, the sound has universal appeal.
“My music grows on people,” says Zuré. “It’s just been a matter of getting it out there to let them hear it.” A 2007 pre-release of the single, Can’t Tell Him No (included on the Sweet Fruit EP), was warmly received; in June of that year, Can’t Tell Him No spent several weeks in the Top 20 of French FM station RadioLaser, and remained in regular rotation for most of that summer. Additionally, for all of November 2007, Zure and her song, Can’t Tell Him No, both maintained their position as No. 1 Independent Artist and Song on the Vibe/BP Music page, garnering hundreds of fans from all across the US (particularly the Deep South) and across the globe. Songs from this current project are already being featured on radio shows (including KISS FM) in Sweden, New Zealand and the UK, as well as on various popular podcasts.
Although Sweet Fruit is an EP, Zuré has dubbed it a Multiple Single Release. “Everything in the music business is changing. With digital downloads, every song on an album has to be worthy of being a single. We ended up releasing this project a year later than planned because our music kept evolving and raising the bar, so we had to keep working to meet our own rising standards. Now that we have, I coined the phrase Multiple Single Release to describe our approach to marketing this project.”
Each song represents a different aspect of the artist’s experience. “Love fuels all my work, even when it’s filtered through pain. I guess you could say I’m a love junkie. It’s always about being authentic, expressing pure emotion in a musical way. This time, the thing that fueled me most was Diz’s beats. They triggered a musical emotion and I stayed true to that source. The collaboration birthed this organic sound that neither one of us could have created alone.”
"Sweet Fruit," the title track in this collection, was already written when Zuré met guitarist Chris Morgan. “Months before, I’d actually seen Chris playing with Angie Stone on a music/travel video filmed on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The video stayed in my mind because I spent a lot of time on those islands (my daughter was born in BC) and Angie Stone is one of my favorite singer/writers. So the combination of Angie and Vancouver Island was my personal Heaven on Earth. When Chris contacted me and I realized he’d toured with her, I was so excited. "Be With You" was inspired by one of Diz’s most passionate tracks. “We first released the song on our mixtape Introducing LadyZuré. Later, we added acoustic guitar (played by the awesome Shelton Garner) and electric guitar (played by Curt Chambers of Franklin Bridge, who incidentally plays for Eric Roberson). Be With You is a powerful lovesong about the kind of love that drives you to be with the someone, regardless of anything.” I wake up thinking about you late at night, when I look in the mirror I see your eyes, and I don’t care if it’s wrong or right, only wanna be with you…
"Break It Down" was another head’s up to men song. “Basically, the song just lays it out… Let me break it down to you…. reeeeeal slow…….You’re never here when I you need to be and I’m definitely not in the mood to be alone, so…”
"Can’t Tell Him No" is a song that feels like walking down a dusty road in Tennessee somewhere on a sunny day, just flowing in an essence that is so close to the bone. “It’s one of the purest songs I’ve ever written.” He’s my summer rain, he’s a sweet refrain, when he calls my name… I can’t tell him no…
"Gotcha" (original and remix) is just a good old-fashioned dance song. Like the way you feel my rhythm. got me diggin’ into it…. “Diz’s track challenged me, it got me dancing and made me want to create a melody that was an inescapable polyrhythm.” How you get your spine to move like mine when we’re on the dance floor… Diz’s remix was made later, putting a slow grind sexy spin to the song that is sticky sweet with a dark edge.
Mr. Diz began his musical career at young age— the native Brooklynite was 16 years old when First Priority Music recognized his talent and signed him. Known back then as K-Swift, he was one half of rap duo The Alliance, along with Fred “King of Chill” Byrd, who incidentally wrote and produced a number of then labelmate MC Lyte’s early hits (including Cha Cha Cha). It is a little-known story that K-Swift was the “friend” who recommended his schoolmate Lana Moore to the fold at First Priority Music. Hip Hop afficianados will recognize the music of The Alliance, including their 1988 underground hit, Bustin’ Loose, as a rare and influential chapter in Hip Hop history,. Stories from this pivotal time in Hip Hop abound… The Roots credit The Alliance song “Kibbles n Bits” (which they interpreted as Table of Contents, Pts. 1 & 2 on their most successful album to date, Things Fall Apart) as one of the songs that inspired their musical creativity. As the years went on, Diz continued as a producer and solo artist— working with a range of artists— from LL Cool J and Nine-Inch Nails, to popular UK group Kosheen— including a stint from 2002 to 2005 as creator, producer and host for the internationally top-rated Sirius/XM “Boneheadz Radio Show.”
“From the moment I heard Zuré sing,” remembers Diz, “I was inspired to create music that would compliment her distinctive sound— and that’s real, cause I had given up on the spirit of being a producer or being involved in the music industry, it was like a marriage gone awry…” The first musical collaboration between Zuré and Diz was actually a jingle for the Boneheadz Radio Show, and then the songs just started flowing.
As a child, Zuré never considered herself a musician, but radio was always in the background. “Music just caught me, seeped in without my knowing it. Where I shop in Brooklyn, they play all soul music, from before Motown to the present. Everyone’s bopping down the aisles, singing these oldies and buying their groceries. As I was shopping, I realized I knew the words, melodies, even the changes and solos to songs that I literally couldn’t tell you the names of or who sang them… but they were in me.”
Later musical inspirations spanned a spectrum of genres, from Coltrane, Hendrix and Stevie Wonder (of course), to Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Diane Reeves, as well as Erykah, Faith, Angie Stone, D’Angelo, Talib Kweli and Nas…. To name a few….Elements of essential R&B, Classic Rock, Jazz and Hip Hop, fused with Zuré’s own innate musicality and the music around her from day to day.
“I’m kind of rebellious,” says Zuré, “I’ll dive into one form and then try to stretch or expand it. Our music is always changing… I’m looking forward to collaborating with Reggae, African Hip Hop and other artists. I never know what’s going to happen next.”

This collaboration with UK Reggae Artist Jon Pecos is a Facebook Success Story. "Jon Pecos brought fresh life to Sweet Fruit," says Lisa. Fans of both are artists are loving the tune... and a Transatlantic Music Video is in the works!"

Check this new remake from Grillade (Ragen Fykes | Keelay | The Parkit's)
Before Grillade was actually a band, project or even a concept, Ragen Fykes was visiting the Bay Area planning to meet with Keelay for some food..
What actually ended up happening was Keelay and long time friend The Park found themselves at Bird and Egg Studios along with Ms. Fykes.
That night there was no plans of making anything specific, rather just wanted to make whatever came to mind. What actually did come to mind is this remake of M64's "In the Pocket".
Since then Ragen Fykes, The Park and Keelay have embarked on a full length project calling themselves Grillade. Here is a taste of what is to come mixed with some good old M64.

It's been at least 3 year since i last broadcast on a regular Saturday night but im glad to say im finally back!
After a lengthy stint on Tuesday evenings MELTDOWN is finally back in it's righteous place, and to celebrate im gonna kick it off with a monster Saturday night show. Playing all those big tunes from the original broadcasts and my MELTDOWN vault alongside a feast of upfront releases for 2010!!

I originally featured this around a year back but then like most things it got lost in time, until i was diggin through some older mixes recently and gave it a spin.
These wicked DJ Muro mixes come in two parts, "A Taste Of White Chocolate" and the mix here "Taste Of Chocolate - Bitter and Sweet".
Muro's mixes usually focus on the funky breaks side of things but here he's also proved that he's got a great ear for the sort of slow-steppers and laidback groovers we all really love from back in the day.

Her soaring career momentum crashed and burned when her first label, Soullife, unexpectedly folded leaving her to the mercy of
a Warner Bros and Atlantic Records merger.
The singer learned that her second effort, 'Sunshine at Midnight', was the last thing on their priority list and scrambled to find
another deal, only to have it under-promoted by her new label, Mathew Knowles' Music World Entertainment in 2007.
Her brand new album for 2010 is a great comback with a mixture of street, sweet and infectious grooves from one of the generation's
most soulful conveyors of contemporary R&B.

For his latest collaboration, indie hip-hops burgeoning producer dujour enlists Homeboy Sandman. Pairing him over a subtle quiet storm-esque Barry White loop makes for an incredibly entertaining listen. Boy Sand deftly uses space between phrases to allow the gravity of his witty couplets to sink in over this head nodder. This is the second collaborative release from Jinesis in a series that initially started with Fresh Daily's Mista Mista assisted "Rap Nowadays" track. Look for another collaborative track in the coming winter weeks.

REGGIE B - THE TRAVLER. LP NOV 2010
Although the Midwest’s premier prodigal son of funk lays his head in the middle of the map these days, it hasn’t always been that way. Reggie B’s jaunts to various spots mean he has all of the corners covered both musically and experientially, and thus his newest solution to ear pollution (that’ s an LP for you squares) is aptly named The Traveler.
Reggie’s restless soul gives way to nineteen tracks laid out in the varied ways only a musical journeyman of his ilk could.
From the slack funk and flamenco touch of Reggie’ s thesis “Planet H” to the hyperized, multi-layered flying keys of “Cold Cold World,” the journey to the center of your backbone is complete.
The swinging impulses aren’t stopping there, though, traipsing the spine up into the cerebellum. Bathe your brain in the uplifting verbiage of tracks like “Elevation” and “ Meaning,” or let Reggie’ s words lick every single one of your funky emotions on “Hypnotic” or “Forever And A Day.”
One-man band notwithstanding, Reggie possesses a collaborative spirit, knowing that sometimes the best art is made only with the input of others. Whether it’s Busy on the beat for “She Knows,” Pharoah on the rhymes of The Traveler,” or Donald Hayes on the aforementioned “Hypnotic” butter sax, the whole cast of characters speak to Reggie’s travels as well, reflecting the various influences picked up and musical bonds forged along the way.
